More than 34,000 people finished the 2008 Flora London Marathon on Sunday April 13th after 35,044 people started the race in Blackheath.

By 6.30pm, 34,420 runners had crossed the finish in The Mall, making the 2008 race the third biggest in the 28 years of the event.
This is a remarkable figure considering the torrential rain on the day! But the April showers did not dampen the spirits, and the crowds were out in their thousands to support all the runners along the route and encourage them every step of the way. The atmosphere was incredible, both for the runners, and spectators.
In the midst of the throng were the 19 Tenovus runners who braved the rain, injuries, cramps and buckets of sweat to raise thousands of pounds for Tenovus.

The team consisted of some dedicated Tenovus supporters, some Marathon first timers and some Marathon veterans.
Welsh dentist Rob Bryant from Treorchy, along with Dean Perry, Peter Ryder and Adam Findlay, ran for Tenovus in order to raise money for the Bethan Lawrence Forget Me Not Fund. Rob said “We wanted to get involved to commemorate Beth, and it’s knowing we are running for something as worthwhile as Tenovus that has kept our spirits and motivation up during training through the wind, rain and snow of the winter months.” CONGRATULATIONS ROB, DEAN, PETER AND ADAM!
Co-workers Steve Elworthy and Craig Nicol also took up the challenge for Tenovus. It was Craig’s first time, but Steve was on hand to dish out some top tips, such as “make sure you wear the right underwear. You don’t want to chaff,” and warned of the dangers of getting blisters if you go under the showers provided on the course. Although, this wasn’t really optional given the weather on the day! CONGRATULATION CRAIG AND STEVE!

Ralph Jones from Aberdare was running the Marathon for the fourth time. Tenovus has a special place in Ralph’s heart after he saw the spectacular work of our Tenovus nurses based at Velindre hospital. Ralph smashed his Personal Best by completing the Marathon in 4 hours and 6 minutes! CONGRATULATIONS RALPH!
First time Marathon Runner Stephanie finished in a magnificent 4 hours and 4 minutes. We hope to see you again next year! CONGRATULATIONS STEPHANIE!

Ruth Steggles from Pentyrch wanted to run the Marathon before a certain special birthday. And she did it! CONGRATULATIONS RUTH!
CONGRATULATIONS to all our other runners: Julia Ferguson from Pontypridd; Bryn Griffiths from Rhondda-Cynon-Taff who has supported Tenovus in three previous London Marathons; Jason Harding, a Marathon regular from Manchester; Christian Pascoe, running in aid of the Bethan Lawrence Forget Me Not Fund from Porthcawl; Duncan Watts from Cheshire; Andrew Pettigrew from Pontypridd and Claire Bowen from Undy.
92,000 people originally applied to run in this year’s race, and approximately 45,791 applications were accepted. More than 35,300 had registered to run by 5.00pm on Saturday.
